Lilith

We all stood motionless, our gazes darting from the Sentinels just barely visible to us and back to the wall that was the only thing separating us from the Garden. I scanned the wall, there had to be some sort of door here. There was no way that her scent just vanished like that, and as she couldn’t portal past it, there had to be something we were missing.

A gentle wind blew through the trees, thankfully keeping us downwind from the guards. From the corner of my eye I caught a gold glint beneath the vines and pushed them out of the way. With a touch they moved back, as if with a mind of their own, revealing an engraved golden gate beneath them.

The guys all noticed at the same time and came rushing to my side, seeing the same problem I did. There was no lock. I looked between them, seeing if they had any ideas, but they all looked just as perplexed as I felt.

I felt Michaels hand gently on my arm as he stepped around me, holding his finger to his lips to indicate we stay quiet. That wasn’t needed though, the Sentinels had effectively struck us all silent. He studied the gate for a moment before laying his palm on the surface. The gold shimmered around his fingers, shining a faint yellow before the gate opened and the scent from within greeted us.

Quickly we all passed through and Michael shut it silently behind us. “The Sentinels won’t bother us now.”

“That seemed way too easy,” I furrowed my brow, trying to figure out what the Hell this feeling was that I couldn’t shake.

“Let’s not knock our good luck,” Elias shrugged.

“For once, I’ll agree with him,” Samael smirked. “Can you still pick up her trail here?”

I took a deep breath, and focused, pushing through the heady scent of jasmine and wildflowers. The rich honeysuckle and fresh fragrance of ripe fruit. Under it all though there was a darkness, one that even I knew didn’t belong here. Eve.

“This way.” The guys parted for me, letting me lead the way deeper into the Garden. We were headed precariously close to the Tree and I feared that it was a trap. If we got much closer, the Angels would sense Elias. There was no question about that. And there was no telling what would happen when they did.

At the last minute, her trail veered off course again taking us toward the outskirts of the Garden. As far as I knew there was not much out here, other than more dense foliage and maybe a field or two. It had been forever since I had actually spent any time in the Garden though, so who knew what lay ahead.

The darkness that emanated from Eve grew stronger, and I knew we were getting close. We reached a small clearing and the moment I saw the old house I knew we had found them.

Next to me, Michael drew in a breath making me look at him in question.
